News: Sky TV in 3D…eventually
Sky TV chief John Fellett believes 3D TV will definitely make its way to Kiwi tellies, but early adopters will have to wait a while before they can head into the third dimension.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Star Times Fellett said his organisation is considering HD 3D, initially floating the idea of screening All Blacks games in a cinema. At present, however, seats would likely cost around $40 to $50 for the project to be feasible.
“A few things have to happen first: at the moment there are about three different formats for 3D and that has to be sorted out,” said Fellett. “I’d be disappointed if we didn’t lead the charge into 3D but we have a policy that you don’t launch a new technology until you’ve finished paying for the last one.”
Fellet also pointed out that the technology thus far is by no means without its quirks: “I’ve seen American football in 3D and I got a little queasy. I wonder how many people are prepared to pay a monthly subscription for me to make them seasick.”‘
