What is an LED-TV, anyway?
LED-TV is the term that has been on everyone’s lips in 2009, but what does it really mean, and is it any better than an LCD-TV?
An LED-TV is an LCD that uses LED backlighting instead of the fluorescent lighting used by LCD TVs.
LEDs are either behind the panel or around the rim, in which case a diffusion panel is used to evenly spread the light.
Behind-panel LEDs theoretically result in deeper blacks and higher contrast, while around-the-rim LEDs allow development of very thin TVs.
LED-TVs claim to use less power than conventional LCDs, and a wider colour-gamut when backlighting is used.
LED-TVs have been popularised and promoted by Samsung, but the first backlit LED-TVs were produced by Sony in 2004, and selected Sony Bravia models still use the technology.
As for the consumer: the best advice is to get out their and compare conventional LCD-TVs with LED-TVs yourself (and try a plasma or two while you’re at it). Trust your own eyes.

Tips
How to win friends and convince people you’re a technology visionary
- Read Tone’s ‘Coming To Your Home First’ feature (page 72 of the latest issue).
- Tell them that LED-TV and even OLED is old news and that the next craze will be 3D TV. Several companies have announced imminent release of 3D televisions; others have noted that they are “in development”.
- Tell them that the much-vaunted high definition picture on TV has nothing on new projection standards, which will allow for 4096 x 2400 pixels and will make 1080 lines look piffling by comparison.
- Tell those IT-loving heathens that it will be the TV of the future that’s the hub of the home entertainment environment, with its superior picture and the ability to snoop anything it wants from computers around the house, wirelessly.
- Tell them that control and access are the two big issues, and it will be the ability of small gadgets to access and control every single bit of technology within and outside the home environment that will define the new era.
