What are filters and how do they affect the sound of your audio system?
If you own a stereo it will undoubtedly have filters, but do you know what they are?
- High-pass filter – lets frequencies above a cutoff point through and attentuates frequencies below the cutoff
- Low-pass filter – lets frequencies below a cutoff point through and attentuates frequencies above the cutoff
- Bandpass – lets frequencies between two cutoff points through, and attenuates other frequencies
- Filters can be active or passive – passive are cheaper, and usually contained within speakers
- Filters have limitations – they can’t reject frequencies outside the cutoff point immediately
- Filters can be used to remove rumble or hiss.
A HPF, LPF (and BPF) used together creates an audio crossover

Tips
How loud can you be with your stereo?
People are entitled to make noise at ‘reasonable level’ according to the council. Typical complaints are loud music at parties, house and building alarms, construction, buskers and bars.
You can be fined for ‘excessive’ or ‘unreasonable’ noise, depending on the time of day, background noise and duration.
There’s no specific decibel (dB) level that’s considered to be exceeding the noise limit – it’s subjective. Consider that if a noise control officer turns up at your place, someone else thinks your noise is unreasonable.
What’s not covered in the noise control act?
- Barking dogs
- Noisy vehicles
- Noise in the workplace
- Noise between tenants with the same landlord
