News: Google Sneaks into the Living Room
Since it already owns your computer, delivers your mail, and is in the process of invading your mobile phone Google now has on your living room. According to the New York Times, Google is teaming up with Intel and Sony to manufacture televisions and set-top boxes that allow users to navigate the web as easily as they change the channel.
The Google TV is said to be likely to use the Chrome Browser to perform search functions and watch online content like YouTube videos.
Software developers are expected to be invited to use Google’s Android operating system to come up with new ways to access TV content in the next couple of months, while the software is said to be open source, allowing manufacturers wide access to the technology.
And, according to the Times, the three companies have approached Logitech, which is advertising for Android developers, to come up with peripheral devices like little keyboards.
Meanwhile, YouTube, another Google property, is now officially a TV station, streaming live Indian Premier Cricket League matches free of charge for the first time last month.
At present, YouTube has a global audience of around 400 million viewers, but despite its enormous base, has failed to make much in the way of cash. By streaming specifically-chosen programs, such as the recent U2 concert and the IPL (rather than user generated content), YouTube hopes to attract a roster of advertisers.
According to eight sponsors have backed the online broadcast, with the Sydeny Morning Herald reporting at least 32 30-second ads appearing during play.
The match will be streamed live, but will be available on demand at a later date.
Google refused to be drawn into commenting on its Google TV project, stating only that the company doesn’t comment on rumours
