News: Canon releases 18-megapixel dSLR

Canon has announced the release of its latest dSLR, the EOS 7D. Positioned as a ‘prosumer’ camera for amateur photographers looking to take a step up, the 7D sits above the 50D in its capabilities, while slightly more modest than the full-frame 5D Mark II.
Described as an ‘all-rounder,’ the 7D utilises a hefty 18 megapixel CMOS sensor with Dual DiG!C 4 image processors – a first for any Canon camera – optimised for fine detail, low noise and reportedly brilliant colour and tones. The Dual DiG!C 4 processors also allow the camera to continuously shoot 90 images in succession, at 8 frames per second.
Like the 5D and 500D, HD video capabilities are included, as is live view shooting mode. ISO sits between 100-6400, but can be expanded to ISO 12800 through custom settings. However, it’s 19-point Auto Focus system is reportedly more akin to the top-of-the-line 1D models.
“With the introduction of this brand new EOS product line, Canon is responding to consumer demand for an enthusiast-level DSLR that is packed with all the best features,” said brand manager Rochelle Mora. “It’s the perfect camera for shooting a creative portrait, sports match, night scene, or even recording all three in FULL HD video.”
The 7D should be in New Zealand stores by October 2009, although local pricing details are yet to be revealed.
