Computing: Logitech Gaming Peripherals review – 69

« Nokia N86 Camera Phone – Review – 79 | Vodafone HTC Magic Smartphone – Review – 79 »

Gamers take their time-sucking hobby pretty seriously. Just ask your local shrink – she’s almost certainly administered gaming addiction therapy more than once in the last financial quarter. The clever folk at Logitech realise that warriors in the virtual realm will do just about anything to give them that winning edge, and this extends to using purpose-built gaming peripherals. Logitech’s G9 laser mouse and G15 keyboard have been designed specifically to allow the PC-based gamer to maim, kill and cast spells with maximum efficiency.

g9-laser-mouseThe G9 mouse takes customisation to a whole new level. Gamers can choose between two interchangeable grips and even change the weighting using the weight cartridge.

The unit’s onboard memory stores five mouse setting profiles, including keyboard macros and LED colour. Uncompromised speed and accuracy are provided by the gaming-grade laser engine (up to 3200 dpi) and full-speed USB, while the oversized teflon feet on the G9′s underside mean it glides ultra-smoothly across almost any surface. The MicroGear scroll wheel allows for either frictionless or click-to-click scrolling – perfect for faultless weapon selection.

The most obvious feature of the G15 is its integral GamePanel LCD screen that shows game stats, important system info and even which server your friends are playing Screaming Accountant Bloodlust on. Players who are sick of randomly hitting game-hampering function keys will love the game mode switch, which disables these potential hazards completely. You can also create useful macros on the fly that play back with a single press of one of the six G keys, and every key is backlit so you can keep playing into the wee small hours while your partner considers your future together.
