DVD reviews: Land of the Lost Blu-ray
Even fans of Will Ferrell will find Land of the Lost difficult to stomach, an attempt to shoehorn the blank-eyed comedian’s Anchorman shtick into a family adventure that tanks pretty early on in the piece.
Loosely based on the 1974 series of the same name, the flick sees ‘quantum palaeontologist’ Rick Marshall (Ferrell), crappy theme park owner Will Stanton (Danny McBride), and cute British research assistant Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel, punching well below her weight) transported to a wacky parallel universe, replete with expensively animated dinosaurs and lizard men.
While it’s ostensibly a ‘family adventure’, it’s too facile to give to kids and too formulaic for adults. Ferrell simply goes through the motions, with none of his brilliantly weird capabilities on show.
No amount of T&A, poo jokes, urine jokes, drug jokes or simple shrieking makes this experience diverting. Watching it in Blu-ray only serves to properly demonstrate how silly the CG landscapes and characters really are.
I can only hope that by my sacrificing 102 minutes of my life to Land of the Lost, no one else need suffer through this drivel. TIM GREY
