Stereonerd: Sex Sells – Still Surprised?
In a small sequel to my recent rant about the Tone cover girl, here’s proof that technology and feminine curves have been bedfellows for, uh, generations. A friend sent me this pic of a wonderful Sony transister radio-cum tape-recorder. Perhaps we’ve got it all wrong by showing the girl’s face when we could be, like Sony, concentrating on other parts of the anatomy?
I don’t know what year this is from – anyone got a clue? – but it’s a classic. Note the line about the cassette’s special ability to record a programme, AT THE SAME TIME AS YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE SHOW! It just makes you realise how far technology has progressed in a relatively short time.
Also note the price: $109.95 (presumably American dollars?) is NOT CHEAP!
So then, our lesson today has taught us three things: 1. sex objects have always been and probably always be used to sell items of techno-lust, 2. Technology in 2009 is AMAZING AND WE SHOULD BE ECSTATIC ABOUT IT, and 3. As we said a couple of issues ago, WE DON’T KNOW HOW LUCKY WE ARE (in pricing terms we’re getting better deals right now than at any time in history).
Righto, go back to the milo, warm slippers and the hottie now… hot water bottle, of course.
