Music Platters: Various Artists – The Strat Pack Live In Concert (Eagle Vision/Shock) BD
This is the kind of thing the extra disc capacity of Blu-ray was made for: 235 minutes, a seemingly endless list of artists and songs all celebrating the Fender Stratocaster guitar.
Recorded in 2004, this gig has an all-star cast of Strat spankers past and present, from oldies The Crickets (Buddy Holly’s band) and Hank and Ben Marvin (The Shadows) through to Amy Winehouse. AMY WINEHOUSE? What the heck is she doing here? Well, I guess she was at the height of her fame when this was made, but still, she does show up one of the weaknesses of this set: not all of the artists are renowned for their skills with the guitar in question, and there’s an almost endless list of legends who are not featured (some, admittedly, because they’re a bit tied up in heaven).
I guess it all comes down to whether you like the featured artists, who include Mike Rutherford (of Genesis) and Paul Carrack (of Squeeze), Gary Moore, Jamie Cullum (JAMIE CULLUM?), Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free), Joe Walsh, Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Ronnie Wood (Strolling Bones).
Yeah, I know, it’s not exactly an inspired lineup. Still, there are moments, like Hank Marvin’s still jaw-dropping ‘Sleepwalk’ or Gary Moore tearing it up just like Jimi on ‘Red House’ or Joe Walsh doing his gonzo rock’n'roll ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ and even David Gilmour’s trio of numbers has a certain beauty.
What it means for me, however, is that the Strat Pack is a bit of a wasted opportunity, and I would rather have seen a decent documentary about the Stratocaster than wade through this spotty concert.
Still, it looks crisp and sounds crisp and, like I said, tailor-made for HD. GARY STEEL
